More Crew

hi, my name is dorothy and i guess that i am the newest member of the green wood group. kind of just stumbled into the gig. pretty much sums up my whole life! :) i love working here; it is great and warm and friendly and many other adjectives..well maybe not so warm with the current weather situation.

i graduated in may from the university of georgia with a degree in history. awesome, i know. so i guess you could say i am knowledgeable about historical things. i grew up in memphis, tennessee, and my dad was in the woodworking business. so the smell of sawdust and the sound of saws is pretty much second nature to me. i moved to atlanta right after graduation and lived the bum lifestyle for a good three months before i couldn't take it anymore and my parents made me get a real job. so here i am, fumbling smiling and nodding my way through the intricate ways of working in an office and knowing a lot about nothing that the "corporate world" deems not useful.

the work that darwin does is amazing and i cannot believe some of the beautiful products that come out of our lovely little cave down here in downtown atlanta. its always a fun day coming down to the warehouse and playing, i mean working, with people who are fast becoming friends and i am sure will become a family too.

Live edge slabs

We have some really cool live edge slabs right now: cherry (left) and walnut (right), as well as some ambrosia maple pieces (top) that remind me of something else. It seems too pretty for the term "lumber."

Note: live edge means the bark edging remains intact. It's a really cool effect, but can be removed if you're not a fan.

The crew.

Hello. It's Whitney, from Mississippi Wood Trader. I began when Darwin moved to the downtown location.  (It's perfect. I pass Turner Field everyday, on my way into work. It's a great way to start one's day.) I work part-time now, and am in my first year of grad school. Dorothy works part-time, as well. More from her later.

This is me, tree-hugging, as per usual.

This is a great job, filled with beauty and the best of intentions. I love that Darwin focuses on the reclaimed, and the recycled. His work isn't destructive. It's historical, in some cases, and helps old trees find new homes. It's a happy job, and I will post as much as possible, to help to show you the beautiful things I am surrounded by here.

The Flying Butternut

Ok, so they've been here for a month or so, but I am getting around to putting up pictures on our two new prizes.
<--- That's me and the dog, sitting on a 58" (yes, that's right) diameter elm tree. We snagged this baby from Cabbagetown, and had some very nice fellow place it on the trailer. The plans are for us to slab this out at full width, live-edge sizes, and vacuum dry the slabs. They will start at $1000.00, and if you want to reserve one, call us NOW- they're going fast. As far as availability, they should be ready to go in about 6-8 weeks. vacuum drying is fast, but we are trying to preserve this tree and will take our time. Contestant #2 from Cabbagetown has been dubbed "The Flying Butternut", some after the pictures, and is also a nod to the flying biscuit - man I love that place. Sucks they franchised it out.

<----First, call your local friendly crane operator, Thanks Mitch! Then, chain that bad boy up, drag it over........

<------grab with claw, hold breath, cross everything you have.......

<----aaaaand, LIFTOFF! She's airborne, and we're almost there. Just a bit more, and....

<----we got it!! strapped down, ready to go, and we'll get it on the mill here shortly. This log, and the butt log, (shown flying above) will be flitch-sawn at 8/4, and will be available green for $7.00/BF, or dried for $15.00 per BF on slabs. If you want a live-edge slab, call us at 404-790-0932 and we can make it happen. expect to pay $18-22/BF for live edge, vacuum dried lumber. Sooo, those are a couple of the new arrivals, and we are super excited to lay them open. We'll have a sawmill party for the milling, and if you want to come watch, drop us an email at mswoodtrader@gmail.com and we'll make it happen. We also have some beautiful old beadboard, a large block of cherry crotch (below), and some other cool finds, which include a 4.5" thick block of Walnut, 12.5" wide, and Air Dried to 10%. Will make an incredible mantle, or a resawn tabletop. $400.00 takes it. Color like you wouldn't believe. Come and see.

New Facility!!

Hello, and thanks to everyone for keeping in touch! We have opened the doors to our new facility, 17,000 Square feet under roof, and a cool, metro-type log yard. (Yes, you read that correctly).
We are currently located at 675 Metropolitan Parkway in Downtown Atlanta, click here
for a map to get to us.
So, whats new here? Wow - a ton! We have been really busy assembling new cool inventory, have run through Cabbagetown after the tornado collecting trees, including (pictures up tomorrow I swear), a White Walnut, and a 58" diameter Elm - one of the oldest in GA. The Elm was recovered by myself, and Stephen, a local furniture maker with nothing to do one sunny afternoon. The butternut was obtained from our new friend Judy, who thought it was a black walnut, and called us to come and get it. If you need a realtor, get in touch - she's great.

On an aside note - go visit our friends at the lamplighter Cafe, because, in a nutshell, the food is kickin and the price is right. And Eric is a pretty cool dude.

Ok, so, other happenings - we have some really beautiful heart pine in right now, from the York Street Jail in Springfield, MA. If you want a tour of the original building, click here for the youtube.com video. Cool stuff.

Some of the timbers bear the stamp of the "Boston Hard Pine Company" - I'll get a pic of that, and are super nice. Tight, cold-weather grain, and good color.

Other happenings: We are please to welcome Whitney, our new office manager. She puts up with this crew of cro-magnons, keeps up with the city and IRS to keep us out of jail, and still manages to smile! Amazing - hope she keeps it up!.

So anyway, that's the latest happenings, and we'll get more up as soon as I remember to get the camera card back from the house. Stay in touch, and we'll be here, waiting on a visit!
